Harry Britton was born in Cambridge, England and moved to Toronto with his parents in 1881. he began his art education in Toronto under the tutiledge of Farquar McGillivray Knowles from 1902-1908. He then returned to England to study at the Heatherley School of Art from 1909-1911. He taught at St. Ives in Cornwall, where he met his future wife Henrietta Hancock, who was also an artist and became very well known, as he did. They married and returned to Toronto in 1914. Harry taught private lessons in Toronto from then until 1921. The couple lived and painted in England from 1921-1925 and then in Nova Scotia from 1926 through 1934. He became a member of the Ontario Society of artists in 1097 and the Royal Canadian Academy in 1934 and exhibited regularly with both of these institutions. He has five paintings in the National Gallery of Canada.
