Joachim
Gauthier was born in North Bay, Ontario and studied in Tacoma, Washington under
Victor Alonzo Lewis. Upon his return to Canada, he studied under Group of Seven
members Franklin Carmichael and J.E.H. MacDonald in Toronto. He worked as a
commercial artist for the firm of Sampson-Matthews Ltd. for over 37 years where
he met A.J. Casson and the two became life long friends. A.H. Robson, author of
Canadian Landscape Painters, noted him as a painter of promise in 1932. He was a
member of the Royal Canadian Academy, the Ontario Society of Artists and the
Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. His works are in the collections
of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and many private
collections.
The
following is an excerpt from “Joachim Gauthier – His Life – His Works”
written by Paul F. Gauthier and published by Libby’s Of Toronto Art Gallery:
“I
can recall my father telling the stories of how he and Frank would travel all
day on dirt roads to get to Whitefish Falls and Willisville where they would set
out by canoe packed with camping gear and sketching utensils. They would pitch
their tent and tramp the La Cloche Hills searching for subject matter to sketch
their interpretations of the white quartzite hills and lakes…The late twenties
and early thirties were very important to Gauthier as his abilities in outdoor
sketching finally started taking on a mature semblance of balance in
composition, design and colour. These artists were all very competent in line
drawing but it was through their outdoor experiences over the years that
recognition as Canada’s finest delineators of rural and wilderness areas was
attained.
When A.J. Casson joined Sampson-Matthews in 1927, he joined Gauthier,
Frank Carmichael, Sydney Hallam, and Herbert Sydney Palmer on many an excursion
to Holland Landing, Haliburton, Credit Forks, Markham, Parry Sound and other
locations. The paintings these artists produced in this period were a litany of
villages, lakes and woodlands; wonderfully fresh, with a vitality unmatched in
today’s artistic venue.”
