Oscar de Lall was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and was mostly self-taught until later in his career when he studied under Edmond Dyonnet in Montreal. He fled the country in 1918 and attended the naval college in Estonia and then sailed to South America. He arrived in Halifax in 1926 and by 1930 had settled in Montreal. Such masters as Rembrandt, Velasquez, Frans Hals, Edgar Degas and Edouard Manet influenced his style and technique. He exhibited regularly at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Royal Canadian Academy where he exhibited mainly portraits. He was elected an associate of the Royal Canadian Academy in 1946 and a full member in 1959. A portrait of Mrs. T. Ballantyne hangs in the National Gallery of Canada.
